A number of memorial plaques decorate the wall of the RNLI building on the Barbican. These celebrate the lives of local people and losses at sea. The last line of this one and its droll humour brought a smile to my face. I later showed the photograph to a gentleman I was staying with in Cornwall and he told me that he knew the family very well and had worked with Fred. He vouched for the fact that he had indeed been something of a character and had survived the sinking of a minesweeper he had served on during the second world war.
