The eighth in a series of fifteen plaques unveiled to mark the Queen's diamond jubilee in 2012, following the history of Bournemouth through the ages using monarchs' reigns and jubilees as the steps in time. This eighth one relates to Victoria's reign beyond her Golden Jubilee (i.e. 1887-1901). A second pier, at Boscombe, opens in 1889 (actually a third but the one at Southbourne is severely damaged by storms and will be demolished shortly after Victoria's death). Bournemouth becomes a municipal borough in 1890 and receives a coat of arms (see SZ0891 : Bournemouth: Town Hall flag). See SZ0890 : Bournemouth: Diamond Jubilee Plaques for the introductory plaque, and SZ0890 : Bournemouth: five of the Diamond Jubilee Plaques for an overall view of five of the plaques, providing some context. See SZ0890 : Bournemouth: Diamond Jubilee Plaque (7) for the previous plaque in the series, and SZ0890 : Bournemouth: Diamond Jubilee Plaque (9) for the next one.
