This station was opened on the 15th of march 1886 by the Glasgow City & District Railway, which was the first underground railway in Scotland.
The route, two and a quarter miles in length, opened up a useful rail link between the east
and west of the city and was operated by the North British Railway Company.
In 1960, the line through Charing Cross from Helensburgh, Balloch and Milngavie to Airdrie
and Springburn formed the first main line railway electrification scheme in Scotland.
The station, now owned by Railtrack PLC, forms part of Strathclyde's supported rail network,
which is the largest in Britain outside London. Services are operated by Scotrail on behalf of
Strathclyde Regional Council.
