Friends of The Furness Railroad District Friends of the Furness Railroad District, 501(c)(3) organization, was founded in 2007 to celebrate the Wilmington Amtrak Station's 100th Anniversary. FFRD's purpose is to create programs to educate the community about the significant historical role the railroad, the station, and its surrounding areas have played and continue to play in present-day Wilmington. The energy and excitement of industrial growth and expansion of railroads in Delaware during the first century of railroading from the 1820s to the 1920s are presented in this exhibit. Shown are the culture and lifestyle of that time, and examples of the creative process of railroad architecture and engineering. The exhibit reflects changing corporate attitudes and accommodations in station designs made for the comfort and convenience of the traveling public. The funding of this educational exhibit has been made possible by direct financial support from the North American Railway Foundation, a nonprofit, private operating foundation which was founded by the Brotherhood's Relief and Compensation Fund (BR&CF). Its purpose is to explore, nurture, and support railway safety, efficiency, and technology and to educate about and preserve the history of railroads. North American Railway Foundation This exhibit is partially funded by a grant from the Delaware Humanities Forum, a state program of the National Endowment for the Humanities. DELAWARE HUMANITIES Space for this exhibit is generously provided by Amtrak. AMTRAK We wish to thank our local sponsors who have supported our mission and the continuation of our programs.
