The plaque reads:
"In the year 1657 Marmaduke Rawdon had placed near this spot in the garden of his new house, a fine ornamental fountain fed by water piped from 'goddess Well Acre' on the high ground to the north west of the town. The supply which remained constant for 313 years was discontinued in 1970"
Marmaduke built Rawdon House here in 1622 - across the street from this plaque. He was an MP and friends with the royal family of the time - unsurprisingly, he sided with the Royalists during the Civil War. However, surprisingly, he somehow managed to keep this property when the Parliamentarians won the Civil War - not the usual outcome for Royalist supporters.
