At the end of the 19th century disease and poor economic conditions meant that many children were orphaned or neglected. Ontario legislation in 1893 gave Children's Aid Societies guardianship powers and promoted foster care. That year, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Toronto, the Most Reverend John Walsh, called together a group of Catholic laity who created a society to protect children and assist families in a culturally sensitive manner. The Saint Vincent de Paul Children's Aid Society Of Toronto was incorporated on October 22, 1894. The society has relied upon the work of dedicated volunteers, foster parents and staff since its inception. The area served was extended in 1957 and the society's name changed to the Catholic Children's Aid Society of Metropolitan Toronto. 26 Maitland Street became its head office in 1959.
